As a fifth-generation Oregonian who is successfully managing a fourth-generation
family business, Jim Root appreciates heritage. Most likely it’s his long association with both the land and the products of the land that underlies his commitment to finding the perfect balance between using it and preserving it for future generations.
Prior to starting his consulting firm, Jim was owner and chief executive officer of Sabroso Company, an international food-processing company headquartered in Medford, Oregon. Currently exporting to 26 different countries, Sabroso is the nation’s largest processor and seller of single-strength and concentrated fruit purées and a leading provider of dried fruit flakes and fruit preparations for the ingredient and food service channels. Sabroso is dedicated to maintaining sustainable operations and has received certifications from EarthWISE, USDA Organic, the Organic Trade Association and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now program. Sabroso’s success led Tree Top, Inc., to acquire the company as a wholly owned subsidiary in November 2008. Jim is now transitioning more of his efforts to the Root family business portfolio and is interested in sharing his insights with others.
Jim and his staff’s commitment to excellence in every facet of business did not go unnoticed. Under Jim’s leadership, Sabroso was recognized at the state and national levels for exceptional work in production, international trade, economic development, conservation, marketing, human resources and support for the arts.
Jim has a strong interest in encouraging international trade, and he founded the Southern Oregon International Trade Council so that local businesses could share information and support in expanding their markets. Beyond trade, Jim is internationally recognized for his knowledge of sustainable farming practices, and was a consultant to the Sichuan, Shandon and Dandong provinces of China in transitioning to sustainable agriculture. In addition, he is focused on developing processed-food markets for agricultural communities in Mexico, Ecuador, Chile and Argentina.
Because the conservation of land and resources is at the heart of everything Jim does, he is involved in a number of efforts. He is president of the Klamath Basin Rangeland Trust and chairman of the Crater Lake National Park Trust and is serving on the Board of Directors of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
With a BS degree from the School of Agriculture at Oregon State University, an MBA in international business from the University of Oregon and decades of experience in food processing, international trade, public policy and conservancy, Jim is uniquely qualified to bring uncommon solutions to even the most complicated problems.
